1984: Special Edition
Background
George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most popular novels of the last century. A classic in anti-utopian fiction, it tells the story of one man’s struggle to survive in a totalitarian regime where his every move is closely monitored.
Challenge
Completely redesign the novel and create innovative packaging targeted towards fans of the novel to commemorate it’s 60th anniversary of the release of 1984.
Solution
Using the powerful themes of the book as inspiration, the packaging for 1984 resembles something straight out of the novel itself. The case is a specially made cardboard box specially treated polyurethane. The official-looking label around it says things such as “Passed Inspection by Thought Police” and bears the logo of the Ministry of Truth. There are a series of numbers we do not understand and text that is blocked out by a black marker. Inside the box lies the newly designed novel that has been disguised by the packaging, as if it has been smuggled to get to the consumer. It has a totalitarian look to it and feels as though it has come straight out of 1984.
